State Of Matter - Making Butter

As we continue to develop our topic: 'The Science Behind Our Food' we have been looking at how one product can be turned into a number of different products using science.  Today we looked at how we can turn cream into butter and butter milk.

The children did this by putting 1 cup of full cream into a jar and sharing it until if goes from a liquid state to a solid state.  Then of course the children had to try this new product they had made and what better way to do that than with Superwine biscuits!

Deer Farm Visit

Today Room 5 and 6 had the wonderful experience of visiting the Coates Family Deer Farm up the Haupiri Valley.  During this visit we learnt so many wonderful facts about deer and the products that come from deer.  The children are going to be sharing their new knowledge with you on their personal blogs over the next few days.

We need to say a massive thank you to Willy and Michelle Coates for organising such an amazing real life learning experience.  To 'Rusty' from Silverfern Farms for travelling all the way over from the East Coast to talk with us and to Mark for sharing his knowledge and for the samples from his business.

Without the ongoing support of our local community, wonderful parents and school management we would not be able to provide our tamariki with such fantastic experience.

Buddy Reading with Room 2

This term the whole school has made the decision to do buddy reading each day at 11am Monday through to Thursday.  Room 5 and Room 2 are buddy classes.  It is fantastic to see how well this works, how much reading milage we can get in during this time and how strong relationships are being formed between our tamariki.

Designing a Water Safety Poster

Room 5 participated in a challenge that the Westland Rec Centre had put out this week.  The challenge was to create a water safety poster that contained at least 3 facts, was bright and colourful and taught others about water safety.

Here are some wonderful examples from Logan Oates and Lochie Mills.

Our Visit with Harold - Learning To Make Good Choices

We have had a fabulous start back to the term with some great visits to the Life Education Van.  During our time in the Life Ed Van we have been learning about making choices.  Inshirah has put together a fantastic slideshow explaining how we make choices by using the hamburger model.

Feel free to visit the children blogs to see their individual Harold Hamburgers.

Here are some photos from our visit.
