Our Term 1 topic was Let Me Entertain You. This was a topic based on what we all do for entertainment and included things like music and pop stars, magicians, mimes and even how games entertains us. The students got to direct their learning and these children decided to make games for other to try. They were made from a variety of different things. Some examples were a marble run, maths games and even a pin pong game.
Welcome to our blog. We are a class of Year 5 and 6 students at Awahono School in the Grey Valley, Greymouth, NZ. Our teacher is Mrs Bailey.

Awahono Verses The Crusaders!
We finished Term 1 with the best treat..The Canterbury Crusaders came to school to do some rugby skills with us. This was such a cool way to end the term. We did some passing drills, played some short games and then finished with getting a flag each and being able to get them signed.
Mrs Bailey was even really cheeky and got them to read her book!

Research Project - Let Me Entertain you.
Our topic for this term has been 'Let Me Entertain You'. Throughout this topic we have been researching a person who entertains us in one way or an other. Inshirah has finished her research on 'Mrs Bean' and this is a great example of what the challenge was about.

Hokitika Camp 2021
During the first week of March Rm 5 went on a school camp to Hokitika. During this camp the children were able to challenge themselves, show their key competency skills and bond together as a class. We need to say a massive thank you to all the parents who came along to support us on this camp and to all the children for representing Awahono School so well.

Charlotte's Web Dioramas
In Room 5 we have been reading a share book together called Charlotte's Web. This is a story about friendship, kinds and over coming hurdles. The main characters Wilber the pig, Charlotte the spider, Tempelton the rat and Fern the girl who raised Wilber and her brother Avery.
The children were set a task to recreate the barn scene in a diorama form. It was really cool to see how the children included so many details from the book. For example the pig pen, the stool that Fern sat on and the swing the kids played on. This was fun hands on activity that everyone enjoyed doing and when even presented our finish work in assembly.

Swimming
It has such a wonderful start to 2021 and we have enjoyed getting to know each other. A lot of the children said it was great to be able to swim again each day.
Eating Our Corn!
As you will see from one of our previous posts we had planted some popcorn back in November. We were lucky enough to harvest it and have a taste of what we grew. We cooked the corn in the microwave and added some butter and salt to taste. Some quote were: 'It is so sweet and delicious', 'I can't believe this started out as a small seed'.
