Feeling The Love During Lockdown

It can be so hard during lockdown not getting to see the class like normal each day. Today I received this love google drawing from Taylor-Rose and it really made my heart melt. Thank you Taylor-Rose.

Country Study

The children in Room 5 have been studying the Tokyo Olympics.  One of the challenges they were set this year was to pick a country who competed in the Tokyo Olympics and do a country study on them.  Here is a fabulous example that Chido completed on Zimbabwe.

Discovering Out Past - Ahaura Now and Then

This term the students at Awahono have been 'Discovering Our Past'.  This has been a topic where the students did an inquiry around Ahaura and how the town came to be.  We learn many different things and the students were able to focus on half a decade per group.  They had 3 major challenges, 1 was to build a 3D model of Ahaura during the timeframe they were researching, 2 was to create a slideshow with information to support their 3D model and 3 was to build Ahaura on Minecraft.

We had a sharing afternoon today where all the other classes at Awahono came in to see our displays. I am really proud of all the children and the work they presented.

Fraction Kababs

Today we combined Matariki and our learning.  We are having a whole school shared Matariki breakfast so we made some kababs and had to write the fraction of each fruit or marshmallow on each kabab.

Here are some photos of us making the kababs:

After making the kababs we then had to put together a slideshow that showed the fractions that we had made.  Here is Aroha's slideshow:

Just before morning tea the whole school got together and had a shared Matariki Breakfast (it was a late breakfast), while we read the story 'Matariki Breakfast'.  Here are some photos of this awesome experience.

Grey High School Science Club Comes to Awahono!

Today the students in Rm 5 were given a wonderful opportunity as the Greymouth High School Science Club came out to Awahono School to share some kitchen science with us.  There were 3 experiments that we got try one was making sherbert, one was looking at what fruit has the most acid and one was looking whether liquids were acidic, base or neutral.

This was such a cool experience for everyone and we intend to develop our learning around this even more.
