Eating Our Corn!

 As you will see from one of our previous posts we had planted some popcorn back in November.  We were lucky enough to harvest it and have a taste of what we grew.  We cooked the corn in the microwave and added some butter and salt to taste.  Some quote were: 'It is so sweet and delicious', 'I can't believe this started out as a small seed'. 

Potato Planting

 Here at Awahono School we get so many learning opportunities because of our school garden and the wonderful Sue Coleman (our resident expert!).  Sue was teaching the children how to plant potatoes and she showed us 2 ways of doing this, one in soil and one in pea straw.

The children love this real world learning and is linking in nicely with our topic 'The Science Behind Our Food'.

Learning about Composing and Worm Farms

We are super lucky to have Sue Coleman who is an expert in the garden come in and teach us all about how to get our school garden up and running.  Today Sue took us to show how she composts and how her worm farm makes great fertiliser for her garden.

Also we have been super lucky to be gifted a compost bin and a worm farm from the Deans family when they left.  I hope they a proud of the progress we are making to get these two wonderful features up and running.
