Sophie has been learning how to add and subtract in parts, using a number line to help her.
Here is Sophie's explanation of how she solved her two word problems:
Wow Sophie you are really whizzing around your maths problems. I am like the way you spoke in a clear voice and used the numbers in chunks. What I didn't understand was why you used the parts of the number that you did. Would you be able to tell me that part next time so that I can work it out too.
Hi Sophie (and Jackson) Thanks for showing us the problem with the number line. I liked how you put the numbers you were adding or taking away inside the bumps and kept the answers on the number line! You have a very confidant, clear voice for explaining. Have you tried filming this from a 'bird's eye view' angle with the paper on a desk or the floor so we can read the problem better and see just your hands writing?
Kia ora Sophie, Thanks for sharing your video on your class blog. I am sure lots of people will be able to learn about how to use a number line to add and subtract in parts. You have a good clear voice. I did notice you were a very fast talker, maybe you could try and slow yourself down next time, I do know that's a hard thing to do:-) Tania
Kia ora Sophia Ko Tamani Toku Ingoa from south Hornby school I really like your maths that you have done especially how you had you lines set out and ready. Maybe next time you could have read a bit slower because when you read the problem it was a bit fast.

Hello Sophie, my name is Evan and I am a student from South Hornby School. I really like the way you worked that equation out. I'm pretty sure I learnt that exact strategy earlier in the year. I think maybe next time you could slow down and not rush. Is there any other maths strategy you learnt.
