Potato Planting

Here at Awahono School we get so many learning opportunities because of our school garden and the wonderful Sue Coleman (our resident expert!).  Sue was teaching the children how to plant potatoes and she showed us 2 ways of doing this, one in soil and one in pea straw.

The children love this real world learning and is linking in nicely with our topic 'The Science Behind Our Food'.

Bee Man!

On Thursday Awahono had a learning experience around bees.  We were lucky enough to have Noah and Blessed two bee keepers come in and talk to the children about bee and honey.  This was such an incredible learning experience.  The children learnt so much and if you visit their blogs in the next week or so you will see a presentation around bees and a piece of explanation writing on bees.

St Johns First Aide Visit

We were lucky enough today to have Cathrine from St Johns in schools come and visit us.  We learnt how to look out for hazards.  We learnt some alarming statistics as per the photos below.  Also the children had the opportunity to look how injuries can happen here in our school playground.  The children in Room 5 were awesome at identifying dangers.

A Time To Appreciate Our Wonderful Principal

Today was Mrs Wallaces birthday and Room 5 decided to make a big deal of it because during lockdown it was principals appreciation day and we didn't get to celebrate it.  The children decided that they would write down all the things they appreciate Mrs Wallace for.  Mia, Logan and Inshirah presented it to her along with a wee gift to make her day special.

Funday Friday - The Science Behind Cooking Popcorn

For Funday Friday today we tried cooking popcorn in a variety of ways.  The children made a prediction about whether they would be able to taste the difference in the different ways we had cooked the popcorn.  We cook 2 lots on the stove top, 1 using butter and 1 using oil.  We then cooked 3 lots in the microwave, 1 using butter, 1 using oil and 1 with nothing.

The children had to sample all 5 bowls of popcorn and had to see if they could prediction which method was used to cook it.

It was a lot harder to tell than they first thought!  On a side not the best way to get super fluffy popcorn was to cook it in the microwave using not butter or oil!!

It was also a surprise to me to find out that a large number of our children had never cook popcorn on the stove top before.

Reading Food Labels

Today the children in Room 5 took all their new learning from yesterday and created a display to share their new knowledge with others.  They will each be sharing their work on their blogs but here is a snapshot of some wonderful displays.

Food For Thought

Today we were incredibly lucky to have Brittany from Foodstuffs who runs the 'Food for Thought' program.  Brittany worked with the children in Room 5 today to learn about food, nutrition, how to read food labels and how much of the different foods our bodies need.

This was some real world learning not just for the children but for me as the teacher too!  I am 38 and only just got a good understanding of how food labels work and what we should look for when reading food labels.  Make sure you sit down with your children and get them to teacher you about food and the labels that are on our food as they are true experts now!
