Funday Friday - The Science Behind Cooking Popcorn

For Funday Friday today we tried cooking popcorn in a variety of ways.  The children made a prediction about whether they would be able to taste the difference in the different ways we had cooked the popcorn.  We cook 2 lots on the stove top, 1 using butter and 1 using oil.  We then cooked 3 lots in the microwave, 1 using butter, 1 using oil and 1 with nothing.

The children had to sample all 5 bowls of popcorn and had to see if they could prediction which method was used to cook it.

It was a lot harder to tell than they first thought!  On a side not the best way to get super fluffy popcorn was to cook it in the microwave using not butter or oil!!

It was also a surprise to me to find out that a large number of our children had never cook popcorn on the stove top before.

  1. I have cooked popcorn in oil, butter, caramel flavour and with nothing added, and I prefer it cooked with butter. I think the butter gives it a really nice flavour. My children liked the caramel corn the best!(not good for your teeth!)
